Tertiary Study Scholarships

Scholarship opportunities are available for eligible secondary students attending schools in Solid Energy's local mining communities.

These scholarships are offered annually to senior high school students who wish to pursue academic careers to a tertiary level. Our aim is to select students that will take favoured courses of study that complement Solid Energy's business and operations. A list of these courses can be found below.

Solid Energy has a total of nine annual general tertiary scholarships available (worth $2000 per year for up to four years of tertiary study).

Eligible Schools

The scholarships are distributed to eligible schools in the following ratios:

West Coast Secondary Schools

  • One scholarship between Buller High School and Karamea Area School
  • Two scholarships between John Paul II High School, Grey High School and Reefton Area School
  • One scholarship between Westland High School and South Westland High School

Waikato Secondary Schools

  • Two scholarships between Huntly College, Te Wharekura O Rakumangamanga, Te Kauwhata College, Ngaruawahia High School, Hillcrest High School, Hamilton Girls High School, Hamilton Boys High School, Hamilton’s Fraser High School, Fairfield College, St Johns College, Sacred Heart Girls College, St Paul’s Collegiate School, and Waikato Diocesan School for Girls

Southland Secondary Schools

  • Three scholarships between Central Southland College, Aparima College, Verdon College, James Hargest College, Southland Boys High School, Southland Girls High School, Te Wharekura O Arowhenua, Aurora College, Gore High School, St Peters College, Menzies College and Tuatapere Community College

Applying for a Scholarship

To apply for the scholarship, you need to complete the application form and write an essay. This year our application essay has two parts:

  1. Solid Energy has recently been recognised as the country’s most reputable State Owned Enterprise. Tell is, in 1000 words, what you think makes a reputable company and what we might do to maintain that reputation.
  2. Tell us, in 500 words, how winning a Solid Energy scholarship would help you in your study and career aspirations.
